Candle Safety Tips

  1. Never leave burning candles unattended. Extinguish all candles when leaving the room or before going to bed.
  2. Never burn candles on or near anything flammable. Keep burning candles away from furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, plants, paper, decorations, etc.
  3. Candles should only be used with responsible adult supervision. Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets. Do not place burning candles where they might be accidentally knocked over.
  4. Trim candlewicks to ¼ inch each time before burning. Long or crooked wicks can cause dripping and/or uneven burning.
  5. Always use a candle holder specifically designed for candle use. The holder must be heat-resistant, sturdy, and large enough to contain any drips or melted wax. Place the candle holder on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
  6. Keep burning candles away from drafts, vents, ceiling fans, and air currents. Drafts can blow lightweight curtains or papers into the flame, where they may catch fire.
  7. Do burn candles in a well-ventilated room, not in a closed, small space.
  8. Do not burn candles all the way down. Extinguish the flame if it comes too close to the holder or container.
  9. Never touch a burning candle or move a votive or container candle when the wax is liquid.
  10. Burning candles should be placed at least three inches apart from one another.
  11. Using a candle snuffer to extinguish the flame will prevent hot wax from splattering. Never extinguish candles with water, which can cause the hot wax to splatter and may cause a glass container to break.
  12. Be extra careful if using candles during a power outage. Flashlights and other battery-powered lights are safer sources of light during a power failure. Never use a candle during a power outage to look for things in a closet, or when fueling equipment – such as a lantern or kerosene heater.
  13. Extinguish a candle if the flame becomes too high, or if it smokes or flickers repeatedly. This indicates the candle is not burning properly. Allow the candle to cool, trim the wick to ¼ inch, and eliminate any drafts before re-lighting.
  14. Do not use a candle as a nightlight.

Barbecue Safety Tips

  • Location is everything when it comes to placing your barbecue grill.
    • Grills should not be placed indoors or on any balcony or deck above the first floor of any building or structure used for habitation.
    • Locate your grill in an open area away from buildings, dry leaves or brush, or any flammable or combustible material.
    • Place grill on a sturdy, level, non-flammable surface away from low-hanging trees, deck railings, siding, or any combustible materials.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher within reach while grilling.
  • Gas grills need particular care: Read the grill’s manual carefully. Learn how to cut off the fuel supply and extinguish a fire properly. Fires can be caused by an obstruction in the path of the fuel. Regularly inspect your gas grill for problems.
  • Charcoal safety is important: Never burn charcoal inside of homes, vehicles, tents, or campers. Do not add lighter fluid to hot coals.
  • For safety, use long-handled barbecue tools and flame-retardant mitts.
  • While grilling, do not wear loose-fitting clothing. Watch for dangling apron strings and shirt-sleeves.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended near a hot grill. A responsible adult should be in charge of the grill at all times.

Outdoor Safety Tips

Campfire Safety

  • Always build campfires in a fire-pit or fire-ring, downwind of your tent, and make sure your wood and/or charcoal are stored at least 6 feet away from the burning fire. NEVER start a fire in a strong wind.
  • When near campfires, wear snug-fitting clothing. Make sure everyone knows how to put out a clothing fire – STOP, DROP, and ROLL.
  • Keep fire-extinguishing materials like water, sand, or dirt nearby or better yet a fire extinguisher.
  • Clear a 10-foot area around the fire pit of any flammable debris, including dry logs, branches, bushes, needles, or leaves. Make sure there are no low overhanging tree branches above the fire spot.
  • Be sure to completely extinguish your campfire before retiring for the night or departing the campsite, leaving no smoke or hot coals, which should be cool to the touch.
  • When tent camping, avoid open flame of any kind in or near the tent or canopy and never cook inside a tent.

Camp Stove & Lantern Safety

  • Handle flammable liquids with care.
  • Store flammable liquids only in metal containers, preferably safety cans. Store all flammable liquids at a safe distance from your tent, camper, or any source of heat/open flame.
  • Use flammable liquids for their intended purpose only.
  • Fill lanterns and stoves a safe distance from campfires, grills, and other sources of heat/open flame.
  • Use a funnel when pouring flammable liquids, and clean up any spills immediately. Carry only a minimal amount of flammable liquids, and make sure all caps are tight.
  • Handle tanks of compressed flammable gas with caution. Follow all precautions indicated on the tank.
  • Make sure the lantern or stove is placed on a level and sturdy surface.
  • Do not use fuel lanterns and stoves inside your tent.
